Researchers found Mandarin-speaking English learners use different sound cues when hearing and imitating English vowels.

A new Mandarin English vowel study reports that prior language experience affects both how people hear unfamiliar speech sounds and how they reproduce them. The findings matter for second-language learning because they suggest pronunciation problems can reflect the sound categories learners already use, not just mistakes to be corrected.

The Taiwan-led research, published in Second Language Research, examined Mandarin-speaking learners of English as they listened to and imitated English vowel contrasts. National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University said the study focused on two pairs that often challenge learners: beat–bit and bat–bet.

Dr. Yu-An Lu, the corresponding author at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, said every language gives speakers a particular system for sorting speech sounds. According to Lu, learners bring those first-language categories and listening habits into new-language learning.

Why are some English vowels hard for Mandarin speakers?

English vowels can differ in several acoustic ways at once. The study focused on vowel quality, which is tied largely to tongue position, and vowel duration, meaning how long the vowel is held.

Mandarin does not use English tense-lax vowel contrasts in the same way, according to the researchers. That difference can affect how Mandarin-speaking learners interpret English sounds, including vowels that fall between familiar categories.

To test the link between listening and speaking, the researchers made speech stimuli in which vowel quality and duration could be changed separately. Participants completed a categorization task for English words and an imitation task in which they repeated the sounds as closely as they could.

The results showed that learners did not use one general strategy across the vowel pairs. For beat–bit, they relied mainly on how long the vowel lasted. For bat–bet, they leaned more on vowel quality.

Those listening habits were tied to imitation. Learners who used duration more strongly when hearing beat–bit also produced a clearer duration difference when copying those vowels. Learners who used quality more strongly for bat–bet also made a clearer quality distinction in speech.

What does the study say about listening and speaking?

The research addresses a long-running question in second-language research: whether better perception generally leads to better pronunciation. National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University said the new findings point to a narrower relationship, where the connection depends on the specific sound contrast and the cue a learner uses.

Lu said the study shows that researchers should look beyond whether learners are broadly accurate in hearing and speaking. The key issue, according to Lu, is which sound cue learners rely on and whether that cue helps separate the target sounds.

The researchers also found evidence that Mandarin sound categories affected imitation of ambiguous beat–bit vowels. National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University said learners’ productions were influenced by a Mandarin-like /i/ sound, indicating that first-language categories can shape both perception and production.

The study, by Will Chih-Chao Chang and colleagues, frames second-language learning as a process in which learners use existing linguistic knowledge to interpret new sounds. The university said that view could help researchers, educators and clinicians better account for differences in language experience.
