Samsung has offered an early look at what it calls a “brand new shape” for its next Galaxy Z Fold in a promotional video tied to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, according to The Verge. The brief appearance matters because Samsung is expected to change the Fold’s proportions as competition in foldable phones builds.
The Verge reported that the teaser shows Spider-Man removing a foldable phone from a 3D printer and opening it like a book. The shots do not give a clean view of the device, with lens flares obscuring much of the phone’s outline.
The device shown in the video is likely the Galaxy Z Fold 8, The Verge reported. The publication said the handset has been rumored to use a wider, more passport-like form than earlier Fold models.
Samsung has not used the teaser to lay out full specifications, pricing or availability for the phone, according to the details reported by The Verge. The video’s focus is on the shape of the device rather than hardware features such as cameras, screens or battery capacity.
The timing points to a near-term reveal. The Verge reported that Samsung is expected to announce the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, along with other new devices, at a Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for July 22.
The Fold 8 would arrive as Apple is also rumored to be preparing a foldable iPhone with a similar design, The Verge reported. That device could launch later this year, according to the report.
The teaser can be viewed on YouTube. The Verge’s report also links the brief appearance to earlier leaks about Samsung’s redesigned foldable and to expectations for the upcoming Unpacked event.
