Meta is rolling out Muse Image, a new AI image generator that can bring Instagram accounts into generated pictures when users tag them in prompts. Meta said the model is the first image-generation system built by its Superintelligence Labs unit, putting that group’s work directly inside widely used consumer apps.
The company said Tuesday that Muse Image now runs image tools in the Meta AI app, Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta said support for Facebook and Messenger is planned next.
Meta described the launch as part of a broader shift to its Muse family of AI models, which is replacing its Llama lineup. The company has also previewed Muse Video, a coming media-generation model tied to the same family.
Instagram accounts can be tagged in prompts
One of the most notable features is tied to Instagram usernames. Meta said users can mention other Instagram accounts in Muse Image prompts, and the model can use those accounts’ likenesses in the resulting image.
According to Meta, tagging a username allows Meta AI to draw on public photos to create a visual. Meta also said Instagram users have settings that let them control how others reuse their content for AI.
The feature connects Meta’s image generator to Instagram’s social graph and public photo library. Meta has not described the feature in the available announcement as limited to a user’s own account, though it pointed to user controls for AI reuse.
Model works with Muse Spark
Alexandr Wang, whom Meta hired last year to lead Superintelligence Labs, said on Threads that Muse Image is “agentic.” Wang said the model works with Muse Spark, Meta’s large language model, to assess a prompt, search the web and plan before creating an image.
Meta’s AI account on Threads said Muse Image can follow instructions, edit images, combine multiple references and use Instagram for social context. The account also said Muse Image brings tool-use abilities to image generation and integrates with Muse Spark.
Wang also teased Muse Video on Threads. He said Meta’s video model is competitive on prompt adherence, visual fidelity and temporal consistency.
Editing, design and room-redesign tools
Meta said Muse Image can transform photos using suggested prompts. The company also said users can make designs such as invitations and postcards.
The model can also redesign rooms based on an image from Facebook Marketplace or elsewhere on the web, according to Meta. Users can edit photos by drawing directly on top of an image, then share the result to a feed, story or chat, the company said.
The rollout gives Meta a new image model across several of its biggest apps at once. It also puts the company’s newest AI media tools in the same places where users already post, message and browse public photos.
