Marvel has released the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans their clearest look yet at the studio’s next large-scale crossover. The timing puts the film in front of audiences just days before Marvel’s scheduled presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where more details may follow.

The Verge reports that the trailer arrives after months of reminders from Marvel about the size of the movie’s cast. The footage centers on a sprawling conflict that appears to pull together characters from several Marvel groups, including the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and the New Avengers.

According to The Verge, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is shown as a major source of disorder in the trailer. The character is described as a new Latverian enemy, and the footage suggests that the heroes may spend part of the film fighting one another before turning their attention to him.

Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, appears in the trailer as one of the few characters focused on the larger threat, The Verge reports. The footage suggests he recognizes that the different teams need to stop clashing and deal with Doctor Doom instead.

The trailer also includes Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans. The Verge says his presence may help unite the divided groups, though the trailer does not spell out how that will happen.

A crossover built on Marvel history

The Verge describes the footage as another large Marvel spectacle, with a clear emphasis on audience familiarity with earlier X-Men films. That detail points to the movie’s role as a meeting point for several corners of Marvel’s screen universe, although Marvel has not laid out every plot detail in the trailer.

The cast size has been a central part of Marvel’s early promotion for Avengers: Doomsday, according to The Verge. The new footage now gives that promotion a more concrete shape by showing multiple teams sharing the same conflict rather than only teasing the lineup.

Marvel’s Comic-Con appearance later this week could fill in more about the film’s story, cast and place in the broader franchise. The Verge reports that the studio is expected to hold a major presentation at the event.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to reach theaters on December 18. The Verge notes that the date is also set for the theatrical release of Dune Part 3, putting two major franchise films on the same day.
