In comments reported by Deadline, Flanagan said the students described both isolated incidents and repeated mistreatment, including microaggressions that may not appear to outsiders as targeted abuse. He said the show examines cruelty today and the way the internet can encourage, reward and spread it, with teenagers facing those pressures more intensely than adults.
That focus places the new adaptation in a different school environment than earlier versions. The Verge reported that the trailer does not appear built around surprise for viewers who already know Carrie, but around bringing the story’s social pressure and cruelty into a modern context.
Who stars in the new Carrie?
Summer H. Howell plays Carrie in the new adaptation, The Verge reported. The outlet noted that Howell was 21 during filming, compared with Spacek, who was 26 when she shot De Palma’s 1976 film.
The 1976 Carrie remains the best-known screen version of King’s novel, with Spacek’s performance central to its reputation. Flanagan’s series now adds another adaptation to a long-running horror property, with Amazon setting the streaming launch for early October.
