Amazon has set the Blade Runner 2099 release date for Nov. 25 on Prime Video, giving the long-gestating sci-fi series a holiday-season launch. The company will release all eight episodes at once, according to details shared with The Verge, and the first trailer is now available.
The series extends the Blade Runner timeline beyond Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 film Blade Runner 2049. As its title indicates, Blade Runner 2099 is set decades later, with Los Angeles again serving as the center of the story.
When does Blade Runner 2099 come out?
Blade Runner 2099 premieres Nov. 25 on Amazon’s Prime Video. Amazon is using a full-season release model for the show, meaning all eight episodes are scheduled to arrive on the service the same day.
The cast is led by Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, The Verge reported. Silka Luisa, who previously served as showrunner on Apple TV’s adaptation of Shining Girls, is running the series, while Ridley Scott, who directed the original Blade Runner, is attached as an executive producer.
What is Blade Runner 2099 about?
Amazon’s official premise places the story 50 years after Blade Runner 2049. In that version of Los Angeles, the city has been remade, though the premise says humanity is not responsible for that rebirth.
The story follows Cora, described by Amazon as a fugitive trying to stop running by taking on one final identity as a Blade Runner. She is forced to work with Olwen, a Replicant who has only days left to live, as they pursue a runaway whose secret could bring down their unstable city.
The first trailer, according to The Verge, leans on familiar elements from the franchise: a bleak future version of Los Angeles, heavy narration and the series’ recognizable cyberpunk style. Amazon had teased the show with first-look images before formally revealing the trailer and release plan.
How long has the series been in development?
Amazon first disclosed work on Blade Runner 2099 in 2022, The Verge reported. The November launch puts the show more than four years after that initial reveal and nearly a decade after Blade Runner 2049 reached theaters.
The debut also comes as another major cyberpunk project is in the works for streaming. Apple is developing an adaptation of William Gibson’s Neuromancer, The Verge reported, placing Blade Runner 2099 into a broader push by streaming services toward well-known science fiction worlds.
