Apple is preparing a redesigned version of its entry-level MacBook Pro that may arrive in the first half of 2027, according to Bloomberg. The report points to another step in Apple’s Mac transition, with a lower-priced Pro model expected to move closer in design to touch-screen MacBooks the company is also developing.

Bloomberg reported that the updated base MacBook Pro would keep a 14-inch display. The publication said its design is expected to be aligned with Apple’s planned touch-screen MacBooks, which Bloomberg has said are targeted for release between the end of this year and early next year.

Bloomberg previously reported that those touch-screen MacBooks are expected to include a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display similar to the Dynamic Island used on some iPhones. The Verge, citing Bloomberg’s reporting, noted that the base MacBook Pro redesign would follow that broader direction rather than arriving as a separate design track.

Another MacBook Pro update is expected first

The redesign is not the only MacBook Pro change in Apple’s pipeline, according to Bloomberg. The company has completed work on another entry-level MacBook Pro update that keeps the current hardware design and is scheduled for release this year, Bloomberg reported.

The Verge reported that Apple last refreshed the base MacBook Pro in October with an M5 chip update. Bloomberg said Apple is also working on an M6 processor, while it previously reported that Apple plans to move quickly to the M7 line in 2027, including new Pro and Max chips.

The report suggests Apple may use this year’s base model refresh as a chip-focused update before changing the laptop’s external design later. Bloomberg’s reporting did not detail pricing, materials, ports or other exterior changes for the 2027 model.

iPad Pro refresh also in testing

Apple is also testing four new iPad Pro models for release in the spring, Bloomberg reported. The report said those tablets are expected to focus on internal improvements rather than major screen-size changes.

Bloomberg said the new iPad Pros will retain 11-inch and 13-inch displays. The Verge reported that Apple last updated the iPad Pro lineup in October with M5 chips.

The reported iPad Pro work fits with Apple’s recent pattern of updating its high-end tablets and laptops around new in-house processors. Bloomberg did not report a full list of iPad Pro specifications, and the available details center on the number of models, the timing and the continuation of the current screen sizes.

The MacBook Pro and iPad Pro reports remain tied to Apple’s internal product plans, as described by Bloomberg. Apple has not announced the redesigned base MacBook Pro, the next chip-only base MacBook Pro update or the spring iPad Pro models referenced in the report.
