AMD to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic AI buildout
AMD said Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of its Instinct MI450 GPUs under a new infrastructure and engineering partnership.

AMD said Wednesday it will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic and supply chips for a major expansion of the AI company’s computing capacity. The deal matters because Anthropic is racing to secure the data center power and processors needed to train and run Claude, its AI assistant.
Under the partnership, Anthropic plans to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 AI GPUs, according to AMD’s announcement. The systems will use AMD’s Helios rack-scale platform, the company said.
AMD said the first gigawatt of capacity is expected to be deployed in the first half of 2027. The Wall Street Journal reported the agreement earlier.
Anthropic adds another major compute supplier
The AMD agreement adds to a series of infrastructure arrangements Anthropic has struck as demand for AI compute rises. The Verge has reported that Anthropic has reached data center deals with SpaceX and TeraWulf.
Anthropic has also signed AI infrastructure agreements with Google, Broadcom and Amazon, according to The Verge and Anthropic. The Verge has also reported rumors that Anthropic could reach a computing-power agreement with Meta.
The new arrangement gives AMD a prominent customer for its AI accelerator business as it competes for workloads from companies building large AI systems. For Anthropic, the deal adds another source of hardware capacity beyond its existing cloud and data center partners.
Engineering work is part of the deal
AMD and Anthropic also plan a multi-year engineering collaboration, according to AMD. As part of that work, AMD will use Anthropic’s Claude in software development, engineering and product development, the company said.
Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer, said in AMD’s press release that the partnership will help the company obtain and tune capacity for Claude. “By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude,” Brown said.
AMD did not say in the announcement how much of the planned $5 billion investment would be made up front, or provide a full deployment schedule beyond the first gigawatt target. The companies also did not disclose financial terms for the GPU deployment.
The agreement highlights the scale of infrastructure spending behind leading AI systems. Anthropic’s recent deals point to a strategy of lining up multiple suppliers for chips, cloud services and data center capacity as it expands Claude.
