HBO Max took the top two spots in major Emmy nomination totals, led by its hospital drama The Pitt and comedy Hacks. The nominations give the streamer a strong awards position ahead of the September ceremony, according to totals announced Wednesday by the Television Academy and reported by Bloomberg.

The Pitt received 25 nominations in the drama field, the academy said. The series finished ahead of other contenders in that category in the first major count released for the 78th annual Emmy Awards.

Hacks, HBO Max’s satire centered on a Las Vegas comedian, received 24 nominations in comedy. Bloomberg reported that the total was the highest ever for a comedy program in a single year.

Apple TV also placed two programs near the top of the overall tally. Deadline’s nominations scorecard showed the horror-comedy Widow’s Bay in third place with 19 total nominations, followed by the dystopian drama Pluribus, which also streams on Apple TV.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, according to the academy. Comcast’s NBC will broadcast the event, with Peacock also carrying it.

The results arrive as HBO Max’s corporate parent, Warner Bros. Discovery, is in the process of being acquired by Paramount Skydance, Bloomberg reported. The nomination haul puts HBO Max’s programming at the front of this year’s Emmy race while that transaction is pending.
