Hannah Williams salary negotiation lessons now drive Salary Transparent Street, the social media project she built after realizing how much pay secrecy had shaped her own earnings. Fortune reported that Williams, 29, left a data career after a viral TikTok and turned public salary interviews into a media business.

Williams is the creator and host of Salary Transparent Street, where she asks workers what they do and how much they earn. According to Fortune, the brand has 1 million Instagram followers and 1.5 million TikTok followers, with videos featuring jobs ranging from photographers and research assistants to models and elementary school teachers.

Who is Hannah Williams?

Williams graduated from Georgetown University in 2019 and moved quickly through several roles as she tried to raise her pay, Fortune reported. She spent two months at a sales effectiveness firm in Arlington, Virginia, then became a junior data analyst at Artlin Consulting.

Eight months later, Williams joined Booz Allen Hamilton as a data scientist, then moved to Avantus Federal as a senior data analyst. By her fourth job in less than two years, she was earning $90,000 a year at age 23, according to Fortune.

That figure looked different after recruiters began approaching her with offers worth $25,000 more for the same title, Williams told Fortune. She asked her employer for a $15,000 raise and came prepared with performance metrics, but the company said she had been there less than a year and that its raises generally ran 3% to 5% at a time.

Williams told Fortune she had expected that showing strong results would be enough to win the raise. After comparing the company’s raise range with the outside offers, she concluded it could take years to reach the pay she could get elsewhere.

What is Salary Transparent Street?

Salary Transparent Street is a digital media brand built around pay transparency: asking people in public to name their jobs and salaries. The project aims to give workers real examples of pay levels so they can compare their compensation and negotiate with more information.

Fortune reported that the idea grew out of Williams’ final full-time job search. When a recruiter asked for her salary expectations, Williams responded by asking for the role’s budget and was told the job could pay $115,000, which was $10,000 more than she had planned to request.

Williams accepted the senior data analyst job at government contractor Cathexis. She later posted a TikTok explaining her own pay history, and the video spread widely, Fortune reported. After seven months in that role, she left corporate work to run her content business full time.

What salary negotiation advice does Williams give workers?

Williams told Fortune that workers often make a costly mistake by accepting a job before learning what the role is worth. She said it is easier to negotiate a strong starting salary than to make up the gap through later raises.

  • Research market pay, the company’s salary range and benefits before accepting an offer.
  • Ask about the role’s budget instead of naming a number first when possible.
  • Negotiate before signing, even if the conversation feels uncomfortable.
  • For raises, schedule a specific compensation discussion rather than surprising a manager.
  • Start the raise conversation before year-end budgets are already set.

Williams told Fortune that timing matters in compensation talks. Her broader message is that workers need pay information before they can judge whether an offer is fair or whether staying put is costing them money.
