A shooting in Montreal killed three people, including a police officer, a civilian and the suspected attacker, according to city police and AFP. Montreal police said the operation was still under way Monday, leaving residents in the affected area under continued warning.
Police said earlier on social media that a suspect had been “neutralised” and that two officers and one citizen had been injured. The post did not say whether investigators were looking for any additional suspected attackers.
Montreal police later said an officer had died while on duty. AFP reported that the dead included the officer, a civilian and the suspected attacker.
Authorities had warned residents about an “armed and dangerous” suspect in the Cote-des-Neiges area of Montreal, according to the police account. Police urged people to remain indoors and avoid the area while officers continued their work.
No motive has been disclosed, according to police statements reported by Al Jazeera and AFP. Officials had released few details about how the shooting began or what led to the police response.
Police said an update was expected within the next hour. They did not immediately provide further information on the conditions of the injured people or the identities of those killed.
