The three-volume hardcover edition of The Complete Calvin and Hobbes is selling for $89.48 at Amazon when shoppers apply an on-page coupon, according to The Verge. The deal arrives just before Father’s Day, making the Bill Watterson collection a last-minute option for readers who want a substantial book gift.
The Verge’s Cameron Faulkner reported that the boxed set includes every Calvin and Hobbes strip from the comic’s 1985-to-1995 run. Faulkner said the collection originally sold for $225 and is often priced around $130, making the current Amazon offer the lowest price he has seen for it.
The set is made up of three deluxe hardcover books, according to The Verge. The publication also listed Target’s price at $134, putting Amazon’s coupon price well below that comparison point.
Faulkner described the Watterson strips as lighthearted and kid-friendly. He contrasted them with Watterson’s The Mysteries, an adult-themed 2023 book that The Verge said marked the cartoonist’s return from retirement.
Other hardcover deals
The Verge also pointed readers toward discounted deluxe editions of J.R.R. Tolkien books for shoppers considering a different literary gift. Faulkner reported that a deluxe slipcase hardcover edition of The Lord of the Rings, featuring illustrations by Tolkien, is priced at $105.14 at Amazon.
According to The Verge, that Lord of the Rings edition also includes a map of Middle-earth and other extras. Faulkner said the $105.14 price is the lowest Amazon price for the edition in about a year.
The publication also listed a discounted illustrated hardcover edition of The Silmarillion, Tolkien’s prequel to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Faulkner reported that the book is selling for $30.50 at Amazon, which he described as its lowest price in a while.
The Verge said an illustrated slipcase hardcover edition of The Hobbit is also discounted at Amazon, where it is priced at $81.41. Together, the deals put several hardcover literary collections in the same gift category as the Calvin and Hobbes set.
The Verge disclosed that Vox Media may earn a commission when readers buy products through its links. Prices and coupons on retail sites can change, so shoppers may need to check the listing before buying.
