Apple’s AirPods Max 2 are selling for $399.99 at Walmart and Amazon, a $150 cut from their usual $549 price. The discount matters for buyers who have been waiting for Apple’s premium over-ear headphones to come closer to rival noise-canceling models on price.
The Verge reported that Walmart is offering the AirPods Max 2 at that price in every color during its Walmart Deals promotion. Amazon is matching the $399.99 price on the starlight version, according to The Verge.
The Verge described the deal as the lowest price it has seen for the AirPods Max 2 and the first $150 discount for the model. The sale arrives in the run-up to Amazon Prime Day 2026, when major retailers often compete with their own electronics promotions.
What the AirPods Max 2 offer
The AirPods Max 2 keep the same outside design as the original AirPods Max, according to The Verge, but include changes inside. The site’s review credited the headphones with strong audio performance, capable noise cancellation and high-end construction.
The Verge said Apple updated the amplifier while using the same drivers found in the first-generation AirPods Max with USB-C. The newer processing chip also supports features including live translation and conversation awareness, according to the review.
Those features are aimed at users already inside Apple’s device ecosystem. The Verge reported that the headphones lose much of their distinct functionality when paired with devices outside iOS.
Remaining drawbacks
The discount does not change some of the complaints The Verge raised about the product. The AirPods Max 2 still lack a power button, meaning users need the carrying case to put the headphones into sleep mode, according to the site.
Price has also been a common obstacle for the AirPods Max line. At $399.99, The Verge said the discounted AirPods Max 2 are priced in line with its favored noise-canceling headset, Sony’s WH-1000XM6.
Walmart lists the AirPods Max 2 for $399.99 during Walmart Deals, while Amazon’s matching price applies to the starlight color, according to The Verge. The report did not say how long either retailer’s discount will last.
