Anthropic delays API-style billing shift for Claude Agent SDK
Claude Agent SDK users will keep existing subscription usage limits while Anthropic reworks a planned billing change for third-party and automated tools.

Anthropic has put on hold a planned billing change that would have raised costs for heavy users of its Claude Agent SDK. The delay matters for developers and third-party app makers that rely on Claude subscriptions for high-volume automated coding and agent workflows.
The company updated its billing support page Monday to say the changes for Claude Agent SDK use had been paused. Anthropic said current access remains unchanged for now while it revises the plan to better fit how customers build with Claude subscriptions.
Anthropic had announced on May 13 that, beginning June 15, use of the Claude Agent SDK through third-party apps and programmatic tools such as the “claude -p” command would be counted separately from ordinary Claude use. Under that plan, outside SDK activity would have been charged at Anthropic’s API prices, while subscribers would receive a monthly credit equal to the cost of their subscription.
That would have marked a major shift for users who now draw Agent SDK usage from the weekly limits tied to their Claude subscription tier. Anthropic’s current subscription caps can give frequent users far more Claude access than the same monthly spend would buy through direct API billing.
A cost comparison by developer Matthew Diakonov said Claude Opus users could break even on a subscription after only two or three messages a day compared with API pricing. Diakonov wrote that developers using Opus as their main coding assistant would pass that point within the first week.
The proposed change drew warnings from developers whose products depend on Claude’s agent tools. The team behind the Zed code editor told users that the plan would amount to a large price increase for people using agents heavily.
Some Claude users also reported receiving email notices from Anthropic saying the billing change had been postponed, according to posts on Reddit and Hacker News. An image shared on Reddit showed a notice saying nothing would change for now.
Anthropic’s retreat comes shortly after GitHub Copilot introduced token-based billing changes of its own. Ars Technica reported that some Copilot users reacted negatively after exceeding new subscription limits under that system.
The billing question also arrives as Anthropic prepares for a possible public listing. Anthropic said it has confidentially submitted draft registration papers to the Securities and Exchange Commission for a potential initial public offering.
Anthropic has signaled that it still sees a mismatch between subscription pricing and some automated agent workloads. In April, Boris Cherny, Anthropic’s head of Claude Code, said the company’s subscriptions were not designed for usage patterns created by third-party tools, including automated agent harnesses such as OpenClaw.
Cherny said at the time that Anthropic was managing capacity while giving priority to customers using its own products and API. He said the company wanted to manage growth in a way that could support customers over the long term.
