New York police are preparing for an event at Madison Square Garden on Friday night as speculation builds over a reported Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce wedding. The Associated Press reported, citing a law enforcement official briefed on security planning, that the couple is set to marry at the Midtown arena.
The official told the AP that a smaller rehearsal dinner is planned for Thursday night. The official spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the arrangements publicly, according to the AP.
Swift and Kelce have not publicly confirmed the wedding plans. The AP said Swift’s representative did not respond to multiple requests for comment, including a request made Wednesday.
New York officials have acknowledged preparations around Madison Square Garden while avoiding direct confirmation of the reported wedding. At a Wednesday news conference, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city was “fully prepared” and added that there was nothing more to share.
Mamdani also referred to the rumors in a social media post about how New Yorkers could keep cool during the heat wave. In the post, he included a nod to anyone “hypothetically” holding a wedding at Madison Square Garden over the weekend.
Police cite busy holiday weekend
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Wednesday that the city was dealing with several major events and conditions over the same period, according to the AP. Those included Independence Day celebrations, a World Cup match and high temperatures.
Tisch also said police were monitoring an event at Madison Square Garden on Friday night. “The NYPD will, of course, have a detail in place, but I am not going to go into more specifics on that at this time,” she said, according to the AP.
Activity around the arena has added to the attention. The AP reported that crews have been unloading equipment from trucks outside Madison Square Garden in recent days, and that a large carpet was briefly placed outside an entrance before being removed.
The reported venue sits above Penn Station, which the AP described as the busiest rail hub in the United States. Madison Square Garden can hold up to 19,500 people and is located in the middle of Manhattan, factors that could make crowd control and transit planning an issue during a holiday weekend.
The arena has hosted weddings before, according to the AP. Those events included the 1974 marriage of funk musician Sly Stone and actor Kathy Silva, and a 1982 mass ceremony led by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
The AP reported that the building’s controlled entrances, secure garage and lack of windows could help shield Swift, Kelce and guests from photographers and drones. The couple announced their engagement on Instagram last August, setting off months of public speculation among fans about where and when the wedding might take place.
