Utah Jazz guard Trey Alexander was removed from the court on a stretcher Monday night after appearing to hurt his side during an NBA Summer League game against the Chicago Bulls. The incident raised immediate concern for a player who signed a two-way contract with Utah last week, according to The Associated Press.
AP reported that Alexander was driving to the basket when he made contact with Chicago’s Caleb Wilson. After releasing the ball toward the hoop, Alexander went behind the basket while holding his side or abdomen, then fell to the floor and appeared to be in severe pain.
The injury occurred at the Thomas & Mack Center with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, AP reported. Medical personnel placed Alexander on a stretcher and took him off the court.
The Jazz did not immediately provide an update on the nature or severity of Alexander’s injury, according to AP. No diagnosis was reported.
Alexander had just joined Utah
Alexander, 23, signed a two-way deal with the Jazz last week, AP reported. Under that contract, he is set to spend time with both Utah and the Salt Lake City Stars, the franchise’s G League affiliate.
The guard played three seasons at Creighton University before giving up his final year of college eligibility to become a professional, according to AP. He later earned G League rookie of the year honors for the 2024-25 season.
AP reported that Alexander appeared in 24 games for the Denver Nuggets during the 2024-25 season. He also played nine games for the New Orleans Pelicans last season.
The Summer League gives NBA teams a chance to evaluate rookies, young players and others competing for roster roles. For Alexander, the game against Chicago came shortly after he joined a Jazz organization that can use him at the NBA level and with its developmental team.
Utah had not announced further information on Alexander’s condition in the immediate aftermath of the game, according to AP.
