Tehran is preparing for a funeral procession for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei after a two-day public farewell ended, Al Jazeera reported. The procession is expected to draw millions, according to the network, underscoring the political and religious weight of the ceremony.
Al Jazeera reported that Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli strike on February 28. The network said millions had already attended funeral prayers in Tehran for Khamenei and members of his family, with aerial video showing the size of the crowd.
Khamenei’s sons appeared publicly for the funeral prayers, Al Jazeera reported, describing the appearance as rare. The network said Mojtaba, identified by Al Jazeera as Khamenei’s son and successor, had not been seen.
Regional violence continues
The funeral preparations come as Al Jazeera reported fresh Israeli military action across the region. The network said Israeli forces carried out air strikes on Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, despite a US-brokered agreement signed with Lebanon last month to stop hostilities.
In Gaza, Israeli drone attacks killed at least two people, according to Al Jazeera. The network also reported that Palestinians demonstrated outside al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, calling on Israel to meet commitments to allow medical evacuations.
Al Jazeera reported a separate case in the occupied West Bank, where a four-month-old Palestinian baby died after Israeli forces at a checkpoint west of Ramallah blocked his transfer to a hospital. The network did not provide additional details in its update about the child’s medical condition or the checkpoint incident.
Settlers detained near Syria
Israel’s military arrested 100 settlers from the Bashan Pioneers movement after they tried to enter Syria, Al Jazeera reported. The network said Israeli forces have seized hundreds of square kilometres of Syrian territory.
Al Jazeera framed the developments as part of its coverage of the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran, as well as Israeli attacks in Lebanon and Palestinian territory. The network said its latest updates followed earlier coverage from Sunday, July 5.
A Reuters photograph cited by Al Jazeera showed people in Tehran paying respects at a makeshift memorial for schoolchildren killed in a strike on a girls’ primary school in Minab, southern Iran, on February 28. The image was taken on July 5, according to the caption published by Al Jazeera.
