At least one person was killed and nine others were hospitalized Friday after a shooting in Midland, Texas, according to local authorities and hospital officials. The city government said the suspected attacker was also dead after a police standoff, ending the immediate threat while leaving investigators at an active scene.
The shooting happened Friday morning in Midland, a city in West Texas. Witnesses told The Associated Press they believed they heard about 40 gunshots.
Midland officials said in a social media update that the active-shooter incident had been resolved and that the suspect had been confirmed dead. The city also said the area had not been cleared and remained an active investigation site.
Hospital reports surgeries and stable patients
Midland Memorial Hospital said nine victims were hospitalized after the shooting. According to the hospital, four of them were undergoing surgery, while five others were in stable condition.
Authorities did not immediately release the name of the person killed, the conditions of those in surgery or information about the suspected shooter. Officials also did not provide a motive.
The city said the suspect had reportedly barricaded themself inside a building for several hours before authorities confirmed the person was dead. It was not immediately clear from the city’s statement how the suspect died.
Road closures remain during investigation
City officials warned that road closures near the scene were expected to continue for an extended period as police and other agencies continued their work. The city said the area remained active even after the threat had ended.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong, speaking at a news conference, expressed sympathy for the victims and their families. She said the city’s thoughts and prayers were with those affected.
The shooting drew a response from local authorities, medical staff and investigators as officials worked to secure the area and account for victims. No further details about the sequence of events were immediately provided by authorities.
The case remains under investigation, according to the city. Officials have not announced additional arrests or identified any other suspects.
