Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France beat Sweden 3-0 in East Rutherford on Tuesday to move into the World Cup round of 16, Al Jazeera and Reuters reported. The victory also gave Mbappe and France coach Didier Deschamps new places in the tournament record book.
According to Al Jazeera and Reuters, Mbappe put France ahead in the 45th minute after moving in from the left and striking into the far corner. Michael Olise helped create the second goal eight minutes after halftime, sending Bradley Barcola through before the winger finished into the top corner.
France’s third came in the 74th minute, Al Jazeera and Reuters reported, with Olise again supplying the pass. Mbappe ran behind Sweden’s defence, stayed onside and finished first time past the goalkeeper to complete the scoring.
Mbappe closes on Messi’s overall mark
Al Jazeera and Reuters reported that Mbappe’s goals lifted him to 10 in World Cup knockout matches, the most by any player. The mark moved him ahead of Brazil’s Leonidas and Ronaldo, who had eight each.
The France captain also reached 18 goals in 18 World Cup appearances, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters. That total left him one behind Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record, which Al Jazeera reported Messi set last week in Argentina’s win over Austria.
Mbappe’s fifth and sixth goals of the 2026 tournament also brought him level with Messi in the Golden Boot race, Al Jazeera and Reuters reported. The two captains have traded positions near the top of the World Cup scoring list during the tournament.
Al Jazeera reported that Mbappe had moved to 15 career World Cup goals when he scored twice in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal in their opening match. Messi, who had 13 at that point, later matched Miroslav Klose’s previous record of 16 with a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria, according to Al Jazeera.
Deschamps adds another win
Deschamps extended his record for World Cup wins as a manager to 18 with the Sweden result, Al Jazeera and Reuters reported. The 57-year-old had passed Helmut Schon’s previous mark of 17 when France beat Norway 4-1 last week.
Al Jazeera and Reuters reported that Deschamps was not present for the Norway match because he had returned to France for his mother’s funeral. Tuesday’s win in New Jersey continued France’s defence under a coach who has now led more World Cup victories than any other manager.
France will next play Paraguay on Saturday in Philadelphia, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters. Paraguay advanced after beating Germany on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Foxborough on Monday, a result Al Jazeera described as an upset of the four-time champions.
