Lamine Yamal is heading to a World Cup final at 19, extending one of football’s fastest rises after Spain beat France in the 2026 semifinal. The Barcelona forward has become a central figure for Spain despite still being a teenager, Al Jazeera reported.
Yamal turned 19 on the eve of the semifinal, when he told reporters his preferred birthday present would be a victory and a trip to New York, according to Al Jazeera. Spain then defeated France in Atlanta, sending the national team into the final and giving Yamal a second major international final after Euro 2024.
Background and identity
Yamal was born in Esplugues de Llobregat, a municipality in Barcelona, Al Jazeera reported. His father, Mounir Nasraoui, is of Moroccan descent, while his mother, Sheila Ebana, is of Equatoguinean descent.
His full name is Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana, but he uses Lamine Yamal for club and country, according to Al Jazeera. The outlet noted that Spanish players often use shortened names, as with Pedri, Xavi and Iniesta.
Al Jazeera reported that “Lamine” is a name with Arabic links commonly found in West African culture, while “Yamal” is a form of the Arabic name Jamal. The outlet also reported that Yamal is a practising Muslim and has celebrated goals with sajdah, the prostration performed in Muslim prayer.
He has also drawn attention outside football. Al Jazeera reported that during Barcelona’s trophy parade earlier this year, Yamal was seen waving a Palestinian flag from an open-top bus.
Barcelona rise and Euro 2024 breakout
Yamal came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy and reached the first-team squad in the 2023-24 season, according to Al Jazeera. The following season, he played a major role as Barcelona won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana.
Al Jazeera described him as a player known for pace, dribbling and passing. His style has led to comparisons with Lionel Messi, whom he admired growing up, and Neymar, who also influenced his game, the outlet reported.
His first major international tournament was Euro 2024, when Spain won the title. Al Jazeera reported that Yamal was the youngest player to appear at that tournament, produced four assists and scored against France in the semifinal, then received UEFA’s Young Player of the Tournament award.
World Cup run
Yamal entered the 2026 World Cup after an injury, and Al Jazeera reported that he struggled to reach his best level during the group stage. Even so, the outlet said he has been a key creator in Spain’s attack and won a penalty in the semifinal against France.
Spain’s run has included victories over Portugal in the round of 16 and France in the semifinal, eliminating Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe, Al Jazeera reported. If Argentina beat England, Yamal could face Messi in the final.
Al Jazeera reported that Yamal is in line to become the third-youngest player to appear in a World Cup final, behind Pele and Giuseppe Bergomi. A win would give him both a European Championship and a World Cup title by age 19.
According to Al Jazeera, Spain have not lost when Yamal has played. The outlet also reported that he has started 12 matches across the World Cup and Euros and won all of them, giving him the best 100 percent starting win rate among European players in those two competitions.
