Iran has begun public funeral events for Ali Khamenei, the country's late former supreme leader, Al Jazeera reported Thursday. The ceremonies are scheduled to last seven days, beginning in Tehran and ending with his burial in Mashhad on July 9.
Al Jazeera reported that Khamenei’s coffin will be taken through the country before the final burial in Mashhad, his hometown. The events mark a formal national farewell for the former supreme leader, with Tehran serving as the starting point for the procession.
A photograph distributed by the Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader and WANA, and carried by Reuters, showed Khamenei’s coffin during a farewell ceremony near the late leader’s office in Tehran on July 3. Reuters said the image was supplied by a third party.
Burial planned for July 9
Al Jazeera said the funeral programme will run for a full week. The coffin’s route through Iran was described as part of the official events before Khamenei is laid to rest in Mashhad.
Mashhad, in northeastern Iran, was identified by Al Jazeera as Khamenei’s hometown and the site of his planned burial. The report did not give further details on the full procession route or the schedule for individual ceremonies outside Tehran.
