India summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador after an Indian crew member was killed in missile strikes on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, Al Jazeera reported. The case matters because the waterway is a strategic shipping route, and New Delhi called for de-escalation and safe passage after the attack.

Al Jazeera reported that Iranian cruise missiles struck two oil tankers in the strait. One Indian seafarer was killed and other crew members were wounded, according to the report.

India’s response was diplomatic rather than military, with New Delhi calling in Iran’s deputy ambassador over the incident, Al Jazeera reported. The report did not identify the tankers, give the number of people wounded or provide further details on the condition of the injured.

New Delhi also urged de-escalation and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Al Jazeera. The report described the strait as a strategic waterway, underscoring India’s concern over risks to commercial shipping and seafarers.

The reported missile strikes add a direct Indian casualty to tensions affecting maritime traffic in the area. Al Jazeera published the report on July 14, 2026.
