An October ceasefire agreement has not stopped Israeli military attacks in the Gaza Strip, Al Jazeera reported. The continued strikes matter because Palestinians remain at risk in places where civilians would be expected to seek safety, including homes and displacement tents.
Al Jazeera said Israeli attacks have also hit funerals, while the death toll continues to climb. The network described the agreement as a “so-called” ceasefire and said Palestinians who survived what it called Israel’s genocidal war are still being targeted.
Israel says its operations are aimed at Hamas fighters, according to Al Jazeera. Gaza’s Health Ministry says most of the people killed are women and children.
The United Nations has said Palestinians remain trapped in a situation that is hard to square with the presence of a truce, Al Jazeera reported. Negotiations meant to move the ceasefire arrangement into its next stage have stalled, according to the network.
Debate over why the truce is failing
Al Jazeera examined the state of the ceasefire in a 27-minute programme presented by Scott McLean. The discussion focused on why the agreement has not halted Israeli attacks and what the breakdown means for Palestinians in Gaza.
The programme featured Gideon Levy, a columnist at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and author of The Punishment of Gaza. Al Jazeera also listed Xavier Abu Eid, a former Palestine Liberation Organization communications director, political analyst and author of Rooted in Palestine, as a guest.
Julie Norman, an associate fellow in the Middle East programme at Chatham House and a professor of international relations at University College London, also joined the discussion, according to Al Jazeera. Norman is co-author of Gaza: The Dream and the Nightmare.
The programme was published on July 18, 2026. Al Jazeera framed the central issue as a gap between the ceasefire agreement and conditions on the ground, where it said Israeli strikes are continuing and civilians continue to be killed.
No new casualty figure was provided in Al Jazeera’s summary. The network said only that deaths are increasing, while citing Israel’s position that it is targeting Hamas and Gaza health officials’ account that women and children make up most of those killed.
