Five people were killed and several others were wounded Monday in a shooting at a youth welfare facility in Stade, a city in northern Germany, police said. The attack drew a major emergency response and led police to tell residents to stay away from the area.
Police said two suspects were detained after the shooting, according to AP and DPA. One of the detained people is believed to be the alleged shooter, the agencies reported.
The motive was not immediately clear. Authorities did not provide details on the identities or ages of the people killed and wounded, and no information was given on the condition of the injured.
Police operation on Dankersstrasse
Stade police said a large operation was under way on Dankersstrasse, a street south of the city center. Officials urged people to avoid the area and follow instructions from emergency crews.
Police described the incident as involving multiple victims at a youth welfare site. “Five people were fatally injured and additional individuals sustained injuries,” police said, according to AP and DPA.
Images from the scene showed police and rescue workers at the location after the attack. The shooting took place in Stade, which is west of Hamburg.
Authorities did not immediately release further details about the circumstances of the shooting. Police also did not say whether they were looking for any additional suspects after the two detentions reported Monday.
