Al Jazeera’s Fault Lines has released a 37-minute documentary investigating allegations that Palestinians held in Israeli prisons and military detention facilities face systematic torture and abuse. The film adds firsthand testimony to claims that rights groups and former prisoners say show a detention system operating with impunity.
The documentary, titled “Into the Darkness,” was published on July 2, 2026. According to Al Jazeera, it examines accounts from former detainees who describe beatings, starvation, sexual violence, medical neglect and psychological abuse while in Israeli custody.
Al Jazeera says the film follows Mohammad Ibrahim, a Palestinian American who was arrested at age 15 for throwing stones. It also includes testimony from a former detainee from Gaza who describes severe sexual violence, according to the broadcaster.
The program frames those accounts as part of wider allegations about conditions for Palestinians held by Israel. Al Jazeera says former prisoners and rights groups allege that abuse has been carried out without accountability inside the prison system and in military detention sites.
The documentary was filmed across Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Tel Aviv, Florida and London, according to Al Jazeera. That range of locations reflects the film’s focus on both detainee testimony and the institutions accused of overseeing detention practices.
Al Jazeera reports that the film examines allegations that the practices described by former detainees occur under the authority of the Israeli military and Israeli officials. The broadcaster names National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir among the officials whose authority is examined in the documentary.
The allegations reported in the film concern Palestinians in both civilian prisons and military detention facilities. Al Jazeera’s presentation centers on testimony from people who say they endured abuse, alongside claims from rights groups and former prisoners about the broader detention system.
The film is part of Fault Lines, Al Jazeera’s investigative documentary program. In this episode, the program focuses on the human impact of detention practices described by former Palestinian prisoners and detainees, while linking those accounts to claims about official responsibility and lack of accountability.
