At least eight people have died and 34 others are missing after a landslide struck the outskirts of Chongqing in southwest China, Al Jazeera reported. The disaster buried 10 residential buildings, making it a major emergency for communities on the edge of the city.
More than 1,000 residents were forced to leave the area after the landslide, according to Al Jazeera. The report did not give further details on the cause of the slide or the status of rescue operations.
Chongqing is a large municipality in southwest China, and the affected area was described by Al Jazeera as being on the city’s outskirts. The scale of the damage was clear in the reported toll: multiple homes buried, dozens of people unaccounted for and a large evacuation under way.
