A Banksy-signed statue that appeared overnight in central London has drawn attention for its image of a suited flag bearer walking toward danger. NPR reported that the work, installed in Waterloo Place in late April, has become a public talking point because of its blunt visual message.
NPR’s Vincent Ni described the piece as life-size and said local authorities had placed protective barriers around it by the time he visited several weeks after it went up. The installation shows a man in a suit carrying a flag while stepping toward a precipice, according to NPR.
The flag is shown blown back across the man’s face, blocking his view as he continues forward, NPR reported. The effect, as described by Ni, is that the figure appears unaware he is close to falling.
The work sits in Waterloo Place, an area Ni described as surrounded by formal monuments linked to Britain’s past. That setting gives the statue an added contrast, according to NPR, because the image of the flag bearer appears among public memorials that celebrate national history.
NPR said the statue is signed by Banksy, the street artist known for public works that often carry social criticism. The report did not cite a title for the piece beyond describing it as the “flag man.”
A public image open to interpretation
Ni wrote that the statue’s meaning is not spelled out, but that its symbolism has invited readings tied to nationalism and political direction. He said he and other viewers considered whether the work was a warning about the effects of nationalism accepted without question, or a broader comment on human failure to see risk ahead.
NPR also framed the installation against wider debate in Britain and elsewhere about the future. In that context, Ni wrote, the image of a man blinded by the flag he carries appears closely matched to the moment.
The statue uses a direct physical setup rather than text: a flag, a covered face and an unseen drop. According to NPR’s account, that arrangement leaves the viewer to decide whether the danger comes from devotion to a national symbol, from short-sightedness, or from both.
Authorities’ decision to put barriers around the work suggests it has been treated as an object needing protection, though NPR did not report any damage or removal effort. For now, the Banksy-signed figure remains presented as a public warning in one of London’s ceremonial spaces, according to NPR.
