8BitDo has announced the Arcade Controller Pro, a new version of its leverless arcade controller with a built-in display for on-device settings changes. 8BitDo said the screen lets players adjust controls and other options from the controller instead of relying on its Ultimate Software V2 app, though the app still works with the device.
The new model follows 8BitDo’s all-button Arcade Controller that launched a little over a year ago, The Verge reported. Like the earlier version, the Pro uses a leverless layout, sometimes associated with Hitbox-style controllers, that replaces a joystick with buttons for directional inputs.
According to 8BitDo, the Pro is thinner than the prior model, with a 16mm body. The Verge reported that it also adds another programmable button, bringing the total to five, including a new one on the left side of the controller.
The Pro also includes a screenshot button for Nintendo Switch, The Verge reported. 8BitDo has not confirmed pricing, availability or when preorders will begin, according to the report.
The controller’s small monochrome screen handles more than button assignment, according to 8BitDo details reported by The Verge. Players can use it to check battery level, change accent lighting and adjust how the controller responds when multiple buttons are pressed at the same time.
8BitDo estimates battery life at up to 15 hours, The Verge reported. The controller supports both Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless connections, according to the report.
The buttons use 8BitDo Core Green low-profile linear mechanical switches, which 8BitDo codeveloped with Kailh, The Verge reported. 8BitDo said the switches can be hot-swapped if players want a different feel.
8BitDo also said it has changed the round button design to make installation easier, according to The Verge. The controller ships with five flat lock caps that can replace the programmable button caps, disabling those buttons to reduce accidental presses.
The earlier 8BitDo all-button model remains listed at $89.99, The Verge reported. 8BitDo has not said whether the added screen, extra programmable control and thinner design will put the Arcade Controller Pro above that price.
