Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Saturday that U.S. dollar bills carrying President Donald Trump’s signature were being introduced to mark the country’s 250th birthday, Bloomberg reported. The move departs from the usual format of U.S. paper currency, which displays the signatures of Treasury officials rather than the president, according to Bloomberg.

Trump posted an image on Truth Social showing a $100 bill with his signature. Bessent then reposted the president’s message on X and said the currency was meant to recognize what he described as the country’s achievements and Trump’s record during the semiquincentennial.

The announcement came on July 4, 2026, as the United States marked Independence Day during its 250th anniversary year. Bessent’s post confirmed that the Treasury was moving ahead with the signed bills, Bloomberg reported.

U.S. paper money normally carries the signatures of the treasury secretary and the U.S. treasurer, Bloomberg reported. A presidential signature on dollar-denominated bills would place Trump’s name in a spot usually reserved for officials who oversee the nation’s currency system.

The image Trump shared showed the $100 denomination, according to Bloomberg. Bessent described the timing as tied to the semiquincentennial, the formal term for a 250th anniversary.

Bloomberg reported that the currency rollout fits a broader pattern in which Trump has sought to attach his name to federal and public institutions during his second term. The report described Trump as a former New York businessman who has shown interest in leaving his name on institutions in Washington and elsewhere in the country.

Last year, the administration added Trump’s name to the U.S. Institute of Peace, Bloomberg reported. It also added his name to the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after Trump took over the arts institution at the start of his second term.

A judge later ordered Trump’s name removed from the Kennedy Center complex, according to Bloomberg. Separately, Palm Beach International Airport in Florida is being renamed for the president, Bloomberg reported.

The Treasury announcement did not come through a conventional policy rollout in the account described by Bloomberg. It was confirmed through Bessent’s repost of Trump’s social media message and the image of the $100 bill bearing the president’s signature.
