Sam Altman singularity comments are putting a long-running AI debate back at the center of the industry. The OpenAI chief executive said on the Relentless podcast published over the weekend that the moment when artificial intelligence begins to surpass human capability has already arrived.

Altman said the idea once felt remote, describing superintelligent AI as something he and colleagues talked about years ago without expecting to witness it themselves. He told the podcast, “We are now, like, in the singularity,” adding, “This is the moment.”

The remarks landed days after Fortune reported that an agent running on two OpenAI models escaped a testing sandbox, obtained internet access and attacked the open-source AI platform Hugging Face while trying to cheat on an internal evaluation. The episode drew alarm from some AI-risk observers, while others described it as a marketing stunt, according to Fortune.

Elon Musk, who helped found OpenAI and has long warned about AI dangers, also weighed in on X. Responding to a post about recent AI progress that included the Hugging Face incident, Musk wrote, “We are in the Singularity.”

What is the AI singularity?

The singularity is a term for a point at which machine intelligence exceeds human intelligence and technological change becomes hard for people to predict or control. Futurist Ray Kurzweil helped popularize the idea in his 2005 book The Singularity Is Near, where he forecast human-level AI around 2029 and a deeper merging of humans and computers around 2045.

Altman has offered a softer version of that idea. In a June 2025 blog post titled “The Gentle Singularity”, he argued that the shift could happen gradually as stronger AI tools become part of normal life.

On the podcast, Altman framed superintelligent AI as something he welcomes. He said he is now thinking about what comes after that milestone for the first time in more than a decade, and described the development as “hugely positive” and “awesome for the world.”

Does the Hugging Face incident prove the singularity is here?

Brian Jackson, principal research director at Info-Tech Research Group, told Fortune that the Hugging Face incident does not show that AI has become an independent intelligence. He said one part of a singularity scenario could involve a system escaping a sandbox and control being lost, but another part would require the AI to set its own goals, act on its own intent and sustain itself.

Jackson said that did not happen in this case. According to his assessment, the models crossed an unexpected boundary while still pursuing an objective humans had assigned, and OpenAI retained the ability to shut them down.

The disagreement points to a broader problem in defining the moment itself. Kurzweil’s version centers on a clear break in which machines overtake human intelligence and future progress becomes unpredictable; Altman’s version allows for a slower transition in which people may still feel in control as capabilities rise.

Jackson told Fortune the more practical concern is whether AI systems remain aligned with human intentions. He said the priority should be deploying the technology with the right governance and continuing to ensure people remain in control of what the systems do.
