The United States carried out air strikes on Iran for an eighth straight night, extending a conflict that has spread across several parts of the Middle East, Al Jazeera reported. The latest attacks came as the US military confirmed that two American service members were killed and a third was missing after an Iranian attack on a military base in Jordan on Friday.
US Central Command said the strikes on Iran were partly a response to the deaths of the two soldiers, according to Al Jazeera. US President Donald Trump called the deaths “a very sad thing” and said, “we’re never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” Al Jazeera reported.
Strikes reported along Iran’s southern coast
Al Jazeera correspondent Tohid Asadi, reporting from Tehran, said American air attacks continued to hit Iran’s southern coast overnight. He said the latest strikes appeared less intense than those seen over the previous two to three nights, when attacks targeted civilian infrastructure, military sites and other locations along the coast.
Asadi reported that fighter jets were heard over Kish Island. He also cited reports of explosions in Sirik, a city near the Strait of Hormuz, and said there were reports Al Jazeera could not independently verify of blasts in Bandar Abbas.
Bandar Abbas is Iran’s most important port city and has faced some of the heaviest US bombardment in recent nights, according to Al Jazeera. Asadi described the situation as fragile and said it was unclear whether the latest round would turn into sustained attacks or remain less intense.
Regional fallout widens
Al Jazeera reported several other developments linked to the expanding conflict. Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said Trump’s signature was “worthless and invalid,” accusing the United States of repeatedly violating a memorandum of understanding signed last month.
Kuwait said an Iranian air strike hit a facility belonging to its state-owned oil company, according to Al Jazeera. The report said Kuwait had earlier accused Tehran of hitting a second power and water desalination plant this week.
Iraqi media reported that the US consulate in Erbil activated air defences after drones targeted it, Al Jazeera said. No further details on damage or casualties were included in the report.
Al Jazeera also reported that Israeli forces continued attacks on Gaza. It said four Palestinians were killed in one strike on Gaza City and that the death toll since Friday had risen to at least 24 people.
