Japan beat Tunisia 4-0 on Saturday in the 1,000th match in World Cup history, according to AFP, moving closer to a place in the last 32. The defeat ended Tunisia’s chances of reaching the knockout stage, AFP reported.
Ayase Ueda led Japan with two goals, scoring once in each half, according to AFP. Daichi Kamada and Junya Ito also scored for Japan in the Group F match.
The result put Japan on four points, level with the Netherlands at the top of Group F, AFP reported. That leaves Japan in a strong position to advance from the group after a dominant win.
AFP identified the match as part of the 2026 World Cup and reported that it was played Saturday. Photo captions from AFP and Reuters placed the game at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico.
Ueda’s two-goal performance gave Japan control across the match, while Kamada and Ito added to Tunisia’s margin of defeat. AFP reported that Ueda scored Japan’s second goal, and Reuters showed Ito celebrating Japan’s third with Ueda and Kamada.
Tunisia’s loss left them out of contention for the knockout round, according to AFP. Japan, meanwhile, joined the Netherlands on four points at the top of the group as the tournament moved toward the round of 32.
