Israeli overnight strikes killed at least five people in Gaza City early Saturday, medical sources told the Wafa news agency. The attack hit a residential building on al-Thalatini Street, adding to the civilian toll in Gaza during a period in which local health authorities say more than 1,000 people have been killed since an October ceasefire.

According to Al Jazeera, those killed included a father and his two daughters. The girls’ mother was wounded in the strike and died later Saturday, and several other people were injured.

Al Jazeera correspondent Tareq Abuo Azzum, reporting from Gaza, said residents had not been warned before the attack. “The area had not received any prior warning before the strikes,” he said, describing the situation as one that was worsening by the day.

More attacks reported in southern Gaza

Al Jazeera reported that earlier Friday evening, five people were injured when Israeli air strikes hit a tent sheltering displaced families in al-Mawasi, in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza. Wafa also reported heavy gunfire Saturday from Israeli naval vessels off Gaza’s southern coast.

The reports came as residents inspected damage at the Safadi family’s apartment in Gaza City after the overnight strike, according to an Associated Press photo caption published by Al Jazeera.

Casualty toll since the ceasefire

Gaza health authorities said at least 1,007 people have been killed and 3,165 wounded in Gaza since a ceasefire brokered by the United States in October, Al Jazeera reported. The same authorities said at least 73,018 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war began in October 2023.

Al Jazeera reported that Israel continues to limit the entry of food, medical supplies and shelter materials into Gaza. About 2.2 million people in the territory have acute humanitarian needs, according to the outlet.

Al Jazeera also reported that Israel’s military continues to occupy large areas of Gaza. The latest strikes in Gaza City and Khan Younis were reported against that backdrop, with civilians still living in damaged buildings, tents and other temporary shelters.
