Hong Wang's Fields Medal win made her the first Chinese woman to receive the top mathematics honor, according to the International Mathematical Union. The 2026 awards also marked the first time two Chinese scholars won Fields Medals in the same year, putting a spotlight on China’s mathematical talent and its links to U.S. and European universities.

The medals were presented Thursday at the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. This year’s winners were Wang, Yu Deng, American mathematician John Pardon and Canadian mathematician Jacob Tsimerman, the IMU said.

The Fields Medal is widely treated as mathematics’ most prestigious prize. It is awarded every four years to two to four mathematicians under age 40, recognizing past work and future promise.

Why did Hong Wang win the Fields Medal?

Wang, originally from Guilin in southern China, works with both New York University and France’s Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. The IMU cited her work connected to the Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions, a problem she resolved with University of British Columbia mathematician Joshua Zahl.

The union said that result has created new paths for work in harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, geometric measure theory and related areas. Wang is the third woman to win a Fields Medal in the award’s 90-year history, according to NPR.

Ulrike Tillmann, vice president and incoming president of the IMU, told NPR that all four 2026 medalists had made major contributions in their fields. She also said Wang’s award was a welcome sign of women contributing at the highest level of mathematics.

Who else won in 2026?

Yu Deng, from Shenzhen, was honored for research that the IMU described as an advance in efforts to derive physical laws from first principles. Deng, who works at the University of Chicago, co-authored a key paper with Zaher Hani of the University of Michigan and Xiao Ma.

Pardon was recognized by the IMU for work in topology and geometry. Tsimerman was honored for extending logical frameworks from abstract mathematics into algebraic geometry.

The 2026 result brings the number of Chinese-born Fields Medalists to three, according to NPR. Yau Shing-Tung won in 1982, and Terence Tao, who was born in Australia, won in 2006.

What does the win say about Chinese mathematics?

Wang and Deng both began at Peking University, one of China’s leading universities, but continued their training abroad. NPR reported that Wang pursued graduate study in France and later completed a mathematics doctorate at MIT, while Deng transferred to MIT after two years in Beijing and then earned a doctorate at Princeton University.

The awards drew celebration on Chinese social media, NPR reported, with users noting that two Chinese mathematicians had won and that one was a Chinese woman. Other posts raised concerns about why many top students leave China for graduate study or research careers overseas.

The discussion comes as China tries to attract technical talent. NPR reported that Beijing introduced a K-visa in 2025 for foreign technology experts and that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology runs the QiMing project to recruit foreign and overseas Chinese STEM researchers.

Each Fields Medalist receives a gold medal bearing the image of the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes and a cash award of 15,000 Canadian dollars, roughly $11,000, according to the IMU and NPR. The IMU also announced other honors, including the Chern Medal for Oxford University’s Graeme Segal and the Abacus Medal for the University of Washington’s Shayan Oveis Gharan.
