A fire at a beach resort in the Dominican Republic killed one tourist and forced the evacuation of almost 1,700 guests, Al Jazeera reported. Authorities are investigating the cause, while saying high winds and a flammable palm roof helped the flames spread fast, according to the broadcaster.
The blaze tore through the resort and prompted a large-scale removal of guests from the property, Al Jazeera reported. The broadcaster did not identify the tourist who died or give further details about the person’s nationality.
Authorities cited two factors in the rapid spread of the fire: strong winds and the resort’s palm roofing, Al Jazeera reported. Palm roofs are common in beach resort construction in parts of the Caribbean, but officials in this case said the material contributed to the speed of the fire’s advance.
The cause remained under investigation, according to Al Jazeera. No official finding on how the fire began was reported.
Al Jazeera reported the fire on June 20, 2026. The report said almost 1,700 other guests were evacuated from the resort after the flames broke out.
No additional casualty figure, resort name or precise location within the Dominican Republic was included in the report. Authorities have not announced a cause in the details reported by Al Jazeera.
