Schlage’s Sense Pro is a $399 smart deadbolt that can unlock as an authorized user approaches, according to The Verge reviewer Jennifer Pattison Tuohy. The lock matters because it combines ultra-wideband auto-unlock, Matter-over-Thread support and a keyhole-free design in one consumer smart lock.
Tuohy reported that the Sense Pro is Schlage’s first smart lock with ultra-wideband hands-free unlocking and its first model to support Matter-over-Thread. It is also Schlage’s first smart lock without a physical keyhole, meaning access depends on digital methods rather than a traditional backup key.
The lock works with Apple Home Key, The Verge reported. That allows hands-free unlocking and tap-to-unlock access using an iPhone or Apple Watch. Google and Samsung support is expected later through Aliro, according to The Verge’s description of the product.
Ultra-wideband, or UWB, is the central feature in Tuohy’s review. She said the Sense Pro unlocked when she walked up to her front door without requiring a code, a phone tap or a fingerprint press. Compared with hands-free systems that use geofencing and other radio technologies, Tuohy found UWB faster and more dependable.
The Verge described the Sense Pro as a clean-looking lock with little visible hardware on the exterior side. Tuohy reported that the front shows a subtle Schlage logo, while the keypad appears only after the user taps the lock.
The review also frames the product as a step beyond earlier smart locks for people already comfortable giving up physical keys. Tuohy wrote that her household has gone nearly a decade without carrying door keys, and she cited remote lock control and digital visitor keys as features she would not want to lose.
That same shift may limit the product’s appeal. The Verge said the Sense Pro may be “too smart” for some users, a concern tied to the lack of a physical keyhole and the heavy reliance on connected access methods.
For now, the biggest constraint is platform support. The Sense Pro’s headline hands-free and tap-to-unlock features are tied to Apple Home Key at launch, according to The Verge, while broader support through Aliro has not yet arrived.
