Google’s Nest Thermostat is selling for $79 in white at Amazon, a $50 discount from its listed $130 price. The Verge reports that the deal is the lowest price it has seen for the 2020 smart thermostat this year.

The discount puts Google’s entry-level model back in the low-cost range for shoppers who want remote temperature control and automated energy-saving tools without buying the higher-end Nest Learning Thermostat. The Verge notes that Vox Media may earn a commission from purchases made through its retail links.

What the Nest Thermostat offers

According to The Verge, the Nest Thermostat can be controlled through the Google Home app, allowing users to adjust heating and cooling from home or while away. The device also supports schedules, so owners can set temperature changes for different times of day.

The thermostat works with voice assistants including Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, The Verge reports. It also supports Matter-compatible voice assistants, giving it broader smart-home compatibility than older devices without that standard.

The Verge describes the thermostat as quick to install and focused on practical smart controls. Once running, it can lower or adjust the temperature when the home is empty, a feature meant to reduce wasted energy use.

Google’s Savings Finder feature can also suggest additional ways to reduce energy consumption over time, according to The Verge. The thermostat can monitor an HVAC system and send alerts when it detects a possible problem, which may help homeowners catch maintenance issues earlier.

For eligible users, The Verge says Nest Renew can shift some heating and cooling activity to times when electricity is cleaner or cheaper. That feature depends on eligibility and is not described as available to every customer.

What buyers give up

The sale applies to Google’s 2020 Nest Thermostat, which The Verge identifies as the company’s entry-level model. It does not include some features found in the latest Nest Learning Thermostat.

One main omission is automatic schedule learning. The Verge reports that, unlike the flagship Nest model, this thermostat does not learn a household’s routine over time and automatically build a schedule around it.

The model also lacks support for Nest Temperature Sensors, according to The Verge. Those sensors are used with compatible Nest thermostats to prioritize the temperature in a specific room, a feature that can be useful in homes with uneven heating or cooling.

Even with those limits, The Verge frames the discounted thermostat as a lower-cost option for people who mainly want app-based controls, voice control and tools that may help cut energy use. The Amazon deal is listed at $79, or 39 percent off the $130 price shown by the retailer.
