Apple signals iCloud Plus AI tier for heavier Apple Intelligence use

Apple is pointing toward an iCloud Plus AI tier for customers who use Apple Intelligence more heavily than standard limits allow. CEO Tim Cook said on a Thursday earnings call that Apple expects people to make frequent use of Apple Intelligence and its coming Siri AI, and that iCloud Plus will have upgrade options for higher usage.
Cook described the plan as a way for customers to “buy up the stack,” according to his remarks on the call. He did not provide pricing, specific limits or a launch date for any added iCloud Plus tiers tied to AI use.
The comments suggest Apple may turn some of its most demanding AI features into another reason to pay for higher subscription levels. iCloud Plus already sits inside Apple’s services business, which also includes subscriptions such as Apple TV and Apple One.
Will iCloud Plus get an AI tier?
Cook said Apple will have “some kind of upgrade possibilities” on iCloud Plus, which points to paid options for people who want more access to Apple’s AI systems. The company has not detailed what those upgrades would include beyond increased capacity for users who need more than the baseline limits.
Apple said in June that some of its AI tools, including image-generation features, carry daily usage caps because they depend on powerful server models. At the time, Apple said increased access was available across most iCloud Plus plans.
That earlier explanation matters because many AI features do not run only on a user’s device. Server-based models require computing resources from Apple, which gives the company a reason to set caps and reserve more access for subscribers on higher plans.
What is changing with Siri AI?
Apple plans to roll out its delayed Siri AI more broadly with iOS 27 this fall, according to The Verge. The upgraded assistant is expected to answer questions about content visible on a user’s screen and carry out actions across apps.
The Siri update also includes a separate Siri AI app with an interface similar to ChatGPT, The Verge reported. That would give Apple a more direct conversational AI product alongside the assistant features built into iPhones and other devices.
Cook’s comments link that coming rollout to Apple’s subscription strategy. If users rely on Siri AI often, higher iCloud Plus plans could become the path to more daily access.
Why Apple services revenue matters
Apple reported $30.74 billion in services revenue over the past few months. The category includes iCloud Plus, Apple TV and Apple One, making subscriptions a large part of Apple’s business beyond hardware sales.
Adding AI-related upgrade options would fit inside that services model. For customers, the practical question will be how much Apple Intelligence use is included at each iCloud Plus level and what extra access costs, details Apple has not yet announced.
