Framework said Thursday that some Framework Laptop 13 Pro orders will get cheaper storage upgrades, giving preorder customers a price break during a difficult stretch for computer components. The company also warned that CPU costs may rise soon, which could lead to higher prices for new Laptop 13 Pro orders.
The update applies to Framework’s repairable, configurable Laptop 13 Pro, which the company announced in April. The Verge reported that Framework CEO Nirav Patel has described the machine as a “MacBook Pro for Linux users.”
Storage improves for some preorder customers
Framework said it secured lower-cost PCIe Gen 5 SSDs from Adata, its supplier. As a result, customers who ordered a Laptop 13 Pro configuration with a 500GB SSD will receive a 1TB SSD instead, at a lower price than their original storage choice, according to the company.
Framework also said buyers can now place orders for configurations that include the new 1TB or 2TB SSDs. The Verge’s Jay Peters reported Thursday that he did not yet see those options available in Framework’s DIY configurator when he checked.
The SSD update gives some customers more storage while reducing the price of specific configurations. Framework did not provide a detailed public price table in the material reported by The Verge.
CPU costs may push system prices higher
The company’s pricing update also included a warning. Framework said it has received indications that CPU prices will increase soon, and it expects it may need to raise the overall price of the Framework Laptop 13 Pro for new orders in the weeks ahead.
Framework did not say how much prices could rise or give a specific date for any change. The warning applies to new orders, according to the company’s statement as reported by The Verge.
The Verge reported that the broader component crunch has already driven price increases across parts of the tech hardware market. The site also reported Thursday on price hikes affecting Apple devices and Xbox consoles.
Shipments were already delayed
The Laptop 13 Pro has also faced a delay. Framework originally planned to ship the first units in June after announcing the laptop in April, The Verge reported.
The company later pushed the first shipments to July, citing issues with the laptop’s haptic touchpad and custom display, according to The Verge. The latest storage and CPU pricing update does not change those previously reported shipment details.
