Amazon has cut the Birdbuddy Pro with Solar Panels to $168 for Prime Day, The Verge reported Friday. The discount matters because it brings a $299 connected bird feeder into a lower price range while Birdbuddy works on newer models.

The Verge said the sale price amounts to 44% off the regular price. The publication also reported that its readers had shown unusually strong interest in the deal during Prime Day.

What the feeder does

The Birdbuddy Pro is a bird feeder with a built-in camera and solar roof, according to The Verge. The publication described it as a yard gadget that takes photos of birds that visit and sends information through an app.

According to The Verge, the feeder supplements 5-megapixel still images with facts about the birds it captures. The solar roof is designed to help keep the camera battery charged, including in cloudy conditions, the publication reported.

The Verge noted that the device’s full price may be difficult to justify for some buyers because its basic idea resembles a video doorbell attached to a feeder with solar panels. The publication also said features such as bird recognition and naming require a subscription through Birdbuddy.

New Birdbuddy models are planned

The deal arrives after Birdbuddy announced two new video bird feeders at CES in January, according to The Verge. The publication reported that the upcoming BirdBuddy 2 is expected to sell for $199.

The Verge said the BirdBuddy 2 adds a rotating camera and a wider field of view, with the ability to create landscape or portrait postcards. The publication reported that the model is otherwise close to the Pro with Solar Panels.

The Verge also reported that the BirdBuddy 2 was briefly offered for preorder and reached some reviewers and a limited number of buyers. As of the report, the product was not listed on Birdbuddy’s website.

A smaller model, the BirdBuddy 2 Mini, is also planned, according to The Verge. The publication said that version has a smaller body, does not include solar panels and is expected to retail for $129 when it launches this year.

More rivals in smart feeders

The Verge said smart bird feeders have become a more competitive category. The publication pointed to alternatives including the Coolfly Aura, which it said it recently reviewed at a similar price point.

The Verge also said Amazon carries lower-cost smart bird feeder options. The publication said Birdbuddy may still offer a more polished experience than many budget models.

Prime Day was nearing its end when The Verge reported the Birdbuddy Pro deal. The sale remained tied to Amazon’s Prime Day pricing, according to the publication.
