Apple is preparing to raise AppleCare Plus subscription prices for Macs and iPads for new customers, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The change matters for buyers adding coverage to a new device, while current subscribers are expected to keep their existing rates.

Bloomberg reported that the increase will be 50 cents per month or $5 per year for new sign-ups. Gurman cited the 13-inch MacBook Air as one example: its AppleCare Plus plan would rise to $7.99 per month from $7.49, or to $79.99 per year from $74.99.

The reported change follows a similar AppleCare Plus price increase for iPhones last year, according to The Verge. The higher Mac and iPad prices had not yet appeared on Apple’s U.S. website or in its AppleCare Plus terms of service when The Verge checked.

Apple has not responded to The Verge’s request for comment, The Verge said. Bloomberg’s report did not indicate that existing AppleCare Plus subscribers would face the higher prices.

AppleCare Plus is sold as a subscription for customers who want added coverage for Apple hardware. Under the reported pricing, the cost change is modest on a monthly basis but adds another increase to Apple’s device protection plans after the iPhone adjustment.
