The question “do kids feel cold” often comes up when a child refuses a sweater, and the answer from pain researcher Joshua Pate is yes. Writing in The Conversation, Pate says children may register cold differently because attention, movement, body physiology and clothing sensations all affect how cold feels.

That distinction matters for parents because a child may be giving an honest report of the present moment while an adult is thinking ahead to wind, waiting around or a long stretch outdoors. A child who says they are not cold may mean they are comfortable right now, not that cold air has no effect on them.

Why do kids refuse sweaters when it is cold?

Pate points to pain research as one way to understand the conflict. Children can miss or downplay a scrape while they are absorbed in play, and cold can also fade into the background when a game, climb or race has their attention.

Activity changes the body’s heat balance as well. Pate notes that children often run, jump and climb in bursts, and working muscles generate heat. When play stops, the child’s attention may return to cold hands or exposed skin at the same time that muscle heat production falls.

Skin detects cooling through sensory nerve endings, according to Pate. One channel involved in sensing cool temperatures, TRPM8, is also activated by menthol, which is why mint can create a cool feeling without an actual temperature drop.

Cold sensation is shaped by more than air temperature. Pate says wind, wet clothing, contact with cold surfaces, movement and time outside can all affect comfort. That helps explain why a parent standing still may feel cold sooner than a child who is moving constantly.

What research says about children and cold

Children are not smaller versions of adults in how they handle cold. Pate cites a 2024 indoor laboratory study of children ages 6 to 9 that found their resting energy use was about 39% higher than that of adults in the study.

The same study found children had warmer skin over parts of the torso and that their hands recovered temperature and blood flow faster than adults’ hands after cold exposure. Pate says those findings do not mean children are immune to cold, but they may experience the same conditions differently from an adult nearby.

The body also manages temperature through behavior, not just automatic reactions such as shivering, sweating and changes in blood flow. Researchers use the term allostasis for the wider process of keeping the body stable through change, including adjustments made in expectation of what comes next.

When parents should insist on warmer clothing

Pate says sweaters themselves can be part of the problem. A child may dislike a garment because it feels itchy, heavy, tight or too warm during active play; tags, seams and some fabrics can be especially uncomfortable for children with tactile sensitivities, including some autistic children.

Instead of asking only whether a child is cold, Pate suggests questions that connect current comfort with what will happen next, such as:

  • Are you comfortable?
  • Will you be running or sitting still?
  • Would you rather wear the sweater or carry it?

Parents should be more firm when a child is very young, wet, unwell, in strong wind or likely to stay outside for a long time, according to Pate. Persistent shivering or numbness means the child needs warmth.

Healthdirect identifies hypothermia as a medical emergency in which core body temperature falls dangerously low. Pate says signs such as growing clumsiness, unusual sleepiness, confusion or reduced responsiveness can point to hypothermia and should be treated urgently.

For routine cold-weather outings, Pate’s practical recommendation is flexible layering. Letting a child carry a sweater, then put it on when activity slows, can respect what the child feels while keeping an adult’s eye on the weather and the schedule.
