Dandruff can often be treated with over-the-counter shampoos that use targeted active ingredients, dermatologists told NBC Select. The outlet’s latest shopping guidance focuses on formulas meant to address flakes, itch, scalp oil and yeast tied to the condition.
NBC Select said people who see no improvement from nonprescription dandruff shampoos should contact a dermatologist about prescription treatment. The guidance is based on interviews with dermatologists and on product information from brands and retailers.
What dermatologists said to look for
Dermatologists cited by NBC Select said Malassezia yeast is associated with dandruff, making anti-yeast ingredients a key part of treatment. Dr. Isabela Jones told NBC Select that ketoconazole is the strongest anti-yeast medication discussed in the guide.
NBC Select named Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo its top overall pick. The shampoo contains 1% ketoconazole, comes in a 7-ounce bottle and was recommended by Jones and Dr. Julie Jackson, according to the outlet. NBC Select listed it at $15.88 at Amazon and Walmart and $19.99 at Target.
The Nizoral formula is described by NBC Select as suitable for different hair types and textures and safe for color-treated hair. The outlet also noted that it contains added fragrance.
Options for sensitive scalps and buildup
For sensitive scalps, NBC Select selected Vanicream Anti-Dandruff Shampoo. The product uses pyrithione zinc, is fragrance-free and is marketed by the brand as helping with itch, redness and flaking while using ingredients such as panthenol and glycerin for scalp hydration.
According to NBC Select, Vanicream’s formula is also free of dyes, parabens and sulfates. The outlet listed the 8-ounce product at $15.29 at Target and $15.96 at Walmart, while noting that the shampoo may be drying.
NBC Select also highlighted Kenkoderm Psoriasis Therapeutic Shampoo as a multipurpose option. The 4-ounce, fragrance-free shampoo contains 3% salicylic acid, which Jones told NBC Select can help remove flakes and scalp oil that allows yeast to grow.
The outlet said Kenkoderm is positioned for psoriasis, dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. NBC Select cited the American Academy of Dermatology in describing seborrheic dermatitis as a condition that can cause itchy, flaky scales and rashes on the scalp and parts of the face.
Other product picks
NBC Select included CeraVe 2-in-1 Anti-Dandruff Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner, which contains pyrithione zinc, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and niacinamide. The outlet said the fragrance-free 12-ounce product is safe for daily use and made for all hair types and textures.
For curly and coily hair, NBC Select chose As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Dandruff Shampoo. The brand says the shampoo targets dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis and is suitable for dry and sensitive scalps, according to NBC Select.
Jupiter Balancing Shampoo was listed as a color-safe option for mild to moderate dandruff, dry scalp and itchiness, according to brand information cited by NBC Select. The shampoo uses pyrithione zinc and includes coconut oil, squalane and sugar kelp extract, according to Jupiter.
NBC Select also included Head & Shoulders Classic Clean Dandruff Shampoo, saying Jones described zinc as a gentle ingredient that can help control yeast linked to dandruff. Selsun Blue Medicated Antidandruff Shampoo was named the outlet’s cooling pick.
