Codex Micro eBay prices rise after OpenAI keyboard sells out

Codex Micro eBay listings are drawing a premium after OpenAI’s $230 developer keyboard sold out the day it launched, Fortune reported. One listing showed an asking price of $1,850, while completed eBay sales reviewed by Fortune show buyers have more often paid far less, though still above the original price.

OpenAI introduced the Codex Micro on July 15 as a limited hardware project built with boutique keyboard maker Work Louder, according to Fortune. The device is separate from OpenAI’s expected consumer gadget, often described as an AI companion, which Fortune reported is due sometime next year.

What is the OpenAI Codex Micro keyboard?

The Codex Micro is a small square keyboard with 12 keys, a joystick, a dial, neon lighting and a microphone button, according to Fortune. It was designed for programmers who use Codex, OpenAI’s coding assistant.

The keyboard’s LED ring can glow red, orange, green or blue to show status, including whether there is an error or whether an AI agent is still working, Fortune reported. The dial changes how much effort the AI applies to a task, and the joystick can start common actions such as debugging an error or refactoring code.

Fortune reported that the Micro sold out in about 12 hours. The highest completed eBay sale it found was $1,250 on July 16, the day after launch; prices then fell to about $800 to $1,000 in the following week and more recently were around $450. Sellers were mostly in the United States, with others in France, the Netherlands and Ireland, according to Fortune.

Will OpenAI restock Codex Micro?

OpenAI does not plan to restock the Codex Micro, Fortune reported. Work Louder sells a similar black version through its own site, with Codex integration but without OpenAI branding.

The project began with OpenAI’s merchandise team for its Supply Co. store, according to Fortune. Quartz reported that OpenAI briefly opened that store to the public in December 2025 for the company’s 10th anniversary, and The Wall Street Journal reported that some social media users mocked the merchandise as “tasteslop” and “nerd merch.”

Mike Di Genova, Work Louder’s co-founder, told Fortune that OpenAI later contacted him about making a developer-focused product. He said OpenAI ordered a large quantity but neither company disclosed the number. Di Genova told Fortune he had expected the stock to take at least a month to sell.

The keyboard also gives OpenAI a small test case for hardware tied closely to its software, Fortune reported. The Micro includes a microphone button for speaking instructions to the AI, and Fortune noted that OpenAI recently released a digital microphone button for ChatGPT Work, a desktop app combining ChatGPT and Codex.

Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president, described voice to Fortune as the “interface of the future” for computing and said he expects people may one day view “clicking and typing” as a phase. Fortune reported that OpenAI is monitoring Micro user feedback in a Slack channel that includes Di Genova.
