Swiss voters have rejected a proposal to place a ceiling on the country’s population at 10 million, Al Jazeera reported. The result blocks a plan promoted by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party and keeps such a national population cap from taking effect.
According to Al Jazeera, 45% of voters supported the measure. The proposal was defeated by a narrow margin, the broadcaster reported.
The Swiss People’s Party had championed the plan, which sought to set a fixed limit on the country’s population. Al Jazeera identified the party as right-wing.
The vote centered on whether Switzerland should adopt a national population limit of 10 million people. With the measure rejected, the country will not impose the proposed cap.
Al Jazeera reported the result on June 14, 2026.
