A reported ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran has stirred cautious hope in Lebanon because Pakistani mediators said it also includes an end to Israel’s war on the country, Al Jazeera reported. The reaction remained sceptical, with Al Jazeera correspondent Heidi Pett saying Lebanese have heard similar announcements before.

Pakistan said a “peace deal” between Washington and Tehran had been reached, according to Al Jazeera’s live coverage. US President Donald Trump confirmed the deal and said the United States would end its blockade of Iranian ports, Al Jazeera reported.

Iran said the text of the agreement had been finalised and that a signing would take place on Friday, according to the same report. No further terms of the deal were detailed in Al Jazeera’s account.

Lebanon watches for proof

Al Jazeera reported that the announcement raised hopes in Lebanon because Pakistani mediators linked it to an end to Israel’s war there. Pett said the mood remained guarded because previous moments of optimism had not settled the conflict.

The report did not describe any immediate change on the ground in Lebanon. It also did not say whether Israel had publicly accepted the terms described by the Pakistani mediators.

The competing statements left Lebanon waiting for implementation rather than announcement, according to Al Jazeera’s account. For now, the reported agreement sits between diplomatic claims from Pakistan, confirmation from Trump and Iran’s statement that a final text is ready for signing.
