Iran summons Ukraine diplomats after an attack on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea killed at least one sailor and wounded another, Al Jazeera reported. The move adds a Ukraine-linked flashpoint to a wider conflict involving Iran, the United States, Israel and regional armed groups.
Al Jazeera reported that Ukraine said it had been aiming at Russian vessels carrying military cargo linked to Iran. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said Russia is helping Iran in its military campaign in the Middle East, according to the broadcaster.
Why did Iran summon Ukraine's diplomats?
Iran summoned the Ukrainian diplomats after what Al Jazeera described as Kyiv’s bombing of an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea. The reported casualties were at least one sailor killed and another wounded.
Ukraine’s stated reason, according to Al Jazeera, was that its operation targeted Russian vessels moving Iran-linked military cargo. The report did not give further details on the ship, the location of the strike or the diplomatic meeting in Tehran.
US bombing pause follows 13 nights of attacks
Al Jazeera’s Mohammad Saleh reported that Friday night was the first night without direct US bombing of Iran after 13 consecutive nights of US attacks. He said tensions remained high in the Strait of Hormuz and that the status of talks was unclear.
The US military also said it boarded a tanker in the Arabian Sea as part of a blockade on Iranian ports, Al Jazeera reported. That came a day after US forces fired on another vessel that was trying to breach the naval blockade, according to the same report.
Other regional fighting reported
Al Jazeera reported several other developments across the region:
- Yemen’s Houthis launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi Aramco oil facilities in Jizan and Yanbu on the Red Sea coast, saying the strikes were retaliation for Saudi-led coalition attacks on Hodeidah port and Kamaran Island.
- Israeli forces killed at least six Palestinians and wounded seven others in Gaza, while raids by the Israeli military and settler attacks spread in the occupied West Bank, including Hebron, Nablus and Tulkarem.
- Lebanese media reported large explosions in Nabatieh and Israeli strikes in Kfar Tebnit and Markaba in southern Lebanon, as Israel continued to breach what Al Jazeera described as a US-brokered ceasefire.
Al Jazeera also reported an antiwar protest outside RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, Britain, where people held Iranian flags near a banner reading “Shut down the bases.” Reuters identified the scene as taking place on July 25, 2026.
