Amazon has cut prices on two compact Xteink E Ink readers during its Prime Day sale, putting both models 20% below their usual prices. The deal matters for shoppers who want a smaller alternative to Kindle and Kobo devices, though The Verge says both readers come with trade-offs.
According to The Verge, the Xteink X4 is selling for $55.20, down from its regular $69 price. The smaller Xteink X3 is listed at $63.20, compared with its normal $79 price.
The Verge describes both devices as far more pocket-friendly than current Kindle and Kobo models. Each includes a magnetic mount, allowing it to attach to the back of MagSafe-compatible smartphones, according to the report.
What buyers get with the X4
The X4 is the less expensive of the two Prime Day listings. In a hands-on test, The Verge said it liked the device’s physical buttons for turning ebook pages.
The same report said the X4’s bundled software could be difficult to use because the reader relies on buttons rather than a touchscreen. The Verge also said the device has strong battery life and supports several ways to add books and documents.
One limitation is the lack of a dedicated online bookstore. The Verge noted that Kindle and Kobo owners have built-in store access, while Xteink buyers need to supply their own reading material through other methods.
How the X3 differs
The X3 offers similar core features in a smaller body, according to The Verge. The report says the X3 also has a revised button layout and works with a wider range of smaller smartphones that have rear magnetic mounts.
The smaller design makes the X3 easier to carry in a small pocket, The Verge said. Its main drawback is charging: the reader uses a proprietary magnetic USB cable, which the report said could be a problem for users who misplace accessories.
Software can be changed
The Verge said the software included with the X3 and X4 is not as polished as it could be. However, the versions sold through Amazon can be upgraded to the free CrossPoint Reader firmware, which The Verge said provides a more refined interface.
The discounts are part of Amazon’s Prime Day promotions this week, according to The Verge. Xteink also lists the X4 at $69 and the X3 at $79 on its own site, matching the regular prices cited in the report.
