Microsoft is rolling out new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro models built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 processors, extending its Windows on Arm push into a new hardware cycle. The devices follow the 2024 Surface lineup that helped introduce Microsoft’s Copilot Plus PC effort, according to The Verge.
Microsoft said the new Surface Pro 12th Edition and Surface Laptop 8th Edition are available now for consumers. The Surface Pro remains a convertible tablet, while the Surface Laptop comes in two sizes.
New Surface models and chips
Microsoft lists the Surface Pro 12th Edition as a 13-inch device with two processor choices: a 10-core Snapdragon X2 Plus or a 12-core Snapdragon X2 Elite. The company is offering the Surface Laptop 8th Edition in 13.8-inch and 15-inch versions, with the same X2 Plus and X2 Elite options.
The Surface Pro starts at $1,499 with 256GB of storage and 16GB of RAM, according to Microsoft’s product listing cited by The Verge. That price does not include a keyboard or stylus, The Verge reported.
The Surface Laptop starts at $1,599 with a 512GB SSD and 16GB of RAM, according to Microsoft. The Verge reported that Microsoft will sell higher-end configurations beyond those entry models.
Higher prices and business versions
The new consumer models start $100 above the current prices for the previous Surface Laptop and Surface Pro generation, according to The Verge. That earlier generation also had a notable price increase in April, which The Verge tied to higher memory costs.
Microsoft is also preparing business editions of the Snapdragon X2 Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12. The Verge reported that those Surface for Business models are expected on July 14 and will start at $1,649.99.
That business starting price is above the consumer X2 models, according to The Verge, but below the Intel Panther Lake Surface for Business models Microsoft announced last month. The Verge reported that the Intel business versions start at $1,949.99.
Colors and performance claims
Microsoft is adding new color choices to the Surface Laptop line, according to The Verge. A Microsoft image shows the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop in jade, while The Verge reported that the 13.8-inch model gets both new colors and the 15-inch version is limited to platinum and black.
Microsoft said the Snapdragon X2 Surface generation brings faster graphics performance while preserving strong battery life, according to The Verge. The available report did not include complete battery-life figures.
The launch keeps Microsoft’s Surface lineup centered on Arm chips for its main consumer devices, after the 2024 Surface Laptop and Surface Pro introduced Snapdragon X1 processors. Microsoft has used those systems as part of its broader Copilot Plus PC initiative, according to The Verge.
