Samsung has introduced a new foldable screen technology that it says is built to be thinner, tougher and less likely to crease. The company’s Flex Titanium display is aimed at one of the most visible weaknesses in foldable phones: the mark left where the screen bends.
Samsung said the technology reflects what it has learned across seven generations of foldable devices. The company plans to bring Flex Titanium to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, according to Samsung.
The name points to the material change at the center of the design. Samsung said Flex Titanium uses two titanium-based components intended to improve the display’s strength and flexibility.
The Verge reported that Samsung’s current foldables, including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, still show the crease problem on the inner screen. A display that better resists that effect would address a long-running issue for the category as phone makers try to make foldables feel closer to conventional smartphones in daily use.
The technology may also matter beyond Samsung’s own phones. The Verge noted that Samsung Display has long supplied Apple, and said the improved panel could potentially appear in a rumored foldable iPhone expected later this year.
Samsung has not said in the reported details whether Flex Titanium will change other parts of the Fold 8 design, such as the hinge or overall device shape. For now, the company is positioning the screen itself as the next step in its foldable hardware.
